TOOLTALK Flap Discs and Applications Flap discs are versatile grinding and finishing tools having four main components: abrasives flaps, flap density (how the flaps are stacked), backing plate shape (flat or conical), backing plate material (fiberglass or plastic). Flap discs can replace both grinding wheels and fiber discs, reducing the time needed to change out tools and materials. The same flap disc can be used for applications ranging from stock removal to blending. Flap Disc Types Type 27 (Flat Style) Smooth grinding, blending and finishing on flat surfaces and slight contours. Type 27 HD (Flat Style HD) Maximum conformability and life. Provides smooth grinding, blending and finishing on a flat surfaces and slight contours. Type 29 (Conical Style) The angle maximizes surface contact for aggressive stock removal. Types of Grain Zirconia Alumina (ZA) Holds up under high temperature and extreme pressure. self-sharpening grain. *For: carbon steel, stainless steel and cast iron Aluminum Oxide (AO) Most common for day to day use. Good initial cut rate. Hard, durable grain. *For: carbon steel and stainless steel Ceramic Formed from chemical process. Grain consists of millions of little crystals and continuously self sharpening grain. Maintains a high cut-rate for the life of the grain. Perfect for hard-to-grind metals. *For: carbon steel, stainless steel, titanium and super alloys Aluminum Oxide (AO) Zirconia Alumina (ZA) Ceramic Density Standard Density Ideal for heavy duty applications and rapid stock removal. High Density More cloth than a standard flap disc. Ideal for grinding contours, or for long life flat grinding applications. Looking for Metalworking Tools?
