TOOLTALK Coolant Troubleshooting Guide PROBLEM Foaming CAUSES Concentration too high Machine Cleaner in sump Mechanical - lines on suction side leaking, cracks in hose, loose fittings Soft Water Pump pressure too high High tramp oil content Fluid level too high or low Concentration too low Poor mixing (soluble oils) Rusting High concentration of dissolved solids in solution Galvanic reaction from similar metals Tool Life Odor Evaporative cooler Fluid contamination Concentration too low or high Wrong product being used High tramp oil content High solids content Concentration too low Low pH High tramp oil content Contamination Solids, sludge or swarf Skin Irritation Residue in Machine Concentration too high High pH High tramp oil content Dirty shop cloths Contamination Concentration too high High tramp oil content Incorrect mixing Hard water Heavy misting SOLUTIONS Adjust concentration to specifications Check pH - drain and recharge if necessary Repair or replace hose pump Sample water, treat if necessary Regulate as needed Skim off oil. Check for leak in oil line Adjust fluid levels Adjust concentration to specifications Add cencentration to water. Never add straight water or concentrate to sump Sample water, treat if necessary. Drain and recharge sump if needed. Keep coolant filtered Clean chips from sump. Drain and recharge sump if needed. Keep coolant filtered Divert air flow away from machine Check contamination sources Adjust concentration to specifications Contact Metalworking Representative Skim off oil. Check for leak in oil line Filter or replace coolant Adjust concentration to specifications Check pH - drain and recharge if necessary Skim off tramp oil or replace coolant Find contamination source Drain sump to purge solids. Put back old coolant and adjust concentration. Recharge if necessary Adjust concentration to specifications Check pH - drain and recharge if necessary Skim off tramp oil or replace coolant Use clean, chip free cloths Find contamination source Adjust concentration to specifications Skim off tramp oil or replace coolant Add cencentration to water.
