TOOLTALK Different Types of Calipers and Micrometers Different Types of Calipers Vernier calipers are comprised of three parts, each used to provide a different type of measurement. The large jaws measure external dimensions, the small jaws measure internal diameter, and the probe at the end of the rule gauges the depth of an object or hole. Dial calipers are used by engineers, technicians, and machinists to measure outside diameter/object thickness, inside diameter/space width, step distance, and hole depth. Measurements are displayed on an easy-to-read dial. Digital calipers show measurements on an LCD screen. They provide an accurate read, and can be used to measure both inside and outside dimensions. Different Types of Micrometers Ratchet stops include a speeder to reduce the time it takes to open and close the micrometer. Friction thimbles are closer to the operator’s hand, allowing them to use one hand when operating the micrometer. The Takeaway There are key differences between these measuring tools. Micrometers have a smaller measuring range and are generally more accurate, often they are capable of measurements to .0001. With a much larger measuring range, versatility is where calipers shine, but this means measurements often only have an accuracy of .001. Both have a place in your process. The question is simply: Which do I need for this particular measurement? Looking for Metalworking Tools?
