TOOLTALK How to Read a Caliper and Micrometer From metalworking to mechanical engineering, precise measurements matter. So having the right measuring tool is key. A caliper is often used to take internal, external, and depth measurements. And a micrometer is more specific, being used to either take only internal or external measurements. How to Read a Caliper 1. Check the caliper to see the measurements. 2. Loosen the lock screw. 3. Slide the jaws to 0 so you can get an accurate measurement. 4. Slide one of the jaws against the object. 5.Read the main scale where it lines up with the sliding scale’s zero. 6. Read the vernier or dial scale. 7. Add the numbers together. How to Read a Micrometer 1. Check the micrometer to see the measurements. 2. Twist the ratchet counter-clockwise, making sure it starts at 0. 3. Twist until the spindle touches the object. 4. Set the thimble lock. 5. Read the measurement. Looking for Metalworking Tools?
