To Weather a Hurricane, Be Prepared During a Hurricane Shut It Down: If possible before evacuating, turn off all utilities at the main switches or valves. This will help to prevent other emergencies such as explosions or fires. Keep Listening: Stay tuned to local radio and TV for weather updates. Evacuate immediately if told to do so. After a Hurricane Stay Out of Water: Flooded water could be contaminated or electrically charged. Wash skin immediately if you come in contact with flood water. Report Immediate Danger: Watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines and report them to the utility company immediately. Document It: Document all the damage done to your property. Take pictures and make a list of everything that will need to be repaired or replaced. Nuts, cereal bars, and dried fruits are also good. First-Aid Kit and Medications: If employees use prescription medications or specialized medical items, suggest that they keep some in the office. Basic Tools: Think multi- tools, duct tape, and plastic sheeting. Sanitation and Hygiene Supplies: To maintain sanitary conditions during a disaster, be fully stocked on things like soap, toilet paper, and garbage bags. PPE: Dust masks, safety glasses, and work gloves are a good place to start, but also consider having thermal blankets, rain ponchos, and sleeping bags on hand.
