PPE Hygiene and Sanitation Guidelines Caring for Arc Flash and Fire-Resistant Clothing (FRC) Sharing is more common for some arc flash and molten metal protection due to the higher cost of these items. Whereas we cannot recommend sharing, we understand it may still be practiced. • Disinfectant sprays and wipes should be avoided as some of these chemicals are flammable and put the wearer in increased danger. Also, the chemicals in these products can break down PPE material increasing the risk of injury. • Warm water and mild soap may be used on hard surfaces such as helmets, hard hats, and face shields. • Welding lenses should be removed prior to cleaning. Special care should be taken; hold lenses from the edges and use thin microfiber towels to avoid scratches. DOs and DON’Ts DO clean and disinfect welding leathers by washing them with soap and water for 20 minutes. DO hang them to dry. DON’T place leathers in the washer or dryer. DON’T use sanitizers such as alcohols or bleaches. They can damage the leather. Portable Gas Detectors Disinfectants and cleaners contain chemicals that can affect a unit’s sensor. • Before disinfecting, clean with a mix of mild soap and water and a soft cloth. Wring out your cloth to ensure you are not introducing too much moisture into the unit. • If manufacturer’s instructions are not available, the CDC recommends a cleaning solution of 5 tablespoons (1/3 cup) of bleach per gallon (or 4 tablespoons per 1 quart) of room temperature water. Make sure the bleach has a hypochlorite concentration of 5-6%. A 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide in water may also be used. • Avoid alcohol-based disinfectants and hand sanitizers; they may cause false alarms. DON’T mix bleach and ammonia or any other cleaner. DO clean surfaces before disinfecting. Cleaning clears the way for disinfectants to work. Do refer to the CDC’s List N for recommendations on disinfectants. DO understand that with repeated use of disinfectant, some components could become damaged over time. Regular inspections should be undertaken by a competent safety professional to ensure optimal operation. • Perform bump testing after disinfecting and prior to use.
