FAQs How do I know if my glasses are ANSI or OSHA approved safety glasses? There must be a “Z87” or “Z87+” marked on the frame or lens. When are you required to have “side protection” or “side shields” on your safety glasses? Side protection is required any time that there are hazards from flying particles or objects. Side shields are either integrated into the safety eyewear or removable (as is often seen with prescription safety glasses). When should you wear goggles? •Common tasks include sawing, chipping, grinding, masonry work, using a nail gun, pouring cement, and working with chemicals. •Goggles are stronger than safety glasses and used for a higher level of impact protection, greater particle protection, and welding light protection, as well as for chemical splashes. Goggles for splash or high dust protection should have indirect venting. •Goggles with direct venting (a mesh of small holes around the sides) tend to fog less, but should not be used with liquid or fine dust hazards. When should you use a face shield? •Common tasks include spraying, chipping, and grinding. •Face shields are used for even higher impact protection and to protect the wearer’s face in addition to the eyes. •Don’t wear a face shield for protection against particles or chemicals. Both can easily go around a face shield, and the curve of the face shield can even direct them into the eye. •Face shields should always be used in addition to safety glasses or goggles because they are so frequently lifted, which leaves the eyes unprotected.
